Why drip edge is extremely important to have on your roof.

Why Is Drip Edge Important?

Drip Edge is a 26 Gauge pre-painted metal flashing that roofers install along the eaves and rakes of a roof, under the starters and first row of shingles. Although Drip Edge is not required on a roof to meet warranty specifications, it is highly recommended by the manufacturer and most roofing companies. It serves many vital purposes. Here are Five.

1. It provides a solid backing for the shingles to lie on, so that they do not curl over the fascia causing them to crack and break. When a shingle roof is installed on your home, it is important that the shingles are installed with a 1 inch overhang past your fascia. This is so that the water will drip off the roof away from your fascia and into the eaves trough. Seeing how shingles are mostly made of asphalt, this means over time your shingles will start to sag and start to curl over the edges of the fascia like in this picture below. When you install drip edge it has a 1 inch pre-made support lip built into the drip edge. It provides a solid backing for the shingles, while still maintaining a 1 inch overhang. This will make it impossible for the shingles to curl over the edge.

2. It Prevents water run-off from travelling behind the eaves trough (between the eaves trough and the fascia) as you can see from the photo on the right. The drip Edge has a metal guard, which when installed correctly; it will provide overlapping of the fascia and eaves trough which will prevent water run-off from getting in-behind this area. The water will then be forced to travel downwards into the eaves trough, instead of in behind which could cause rotting of your fascia due to water penetration.

3. Drip Edge will also cover small gaps between the roof sheathing and fascia. This will help prevent small animals from seeing an opening which they will chew at until they are in your attic. It will also provide a fresh clean look that will properly seal your home from driving rain.upper right hand side picture. 4. When drip edge is installed along the rakes of your roof, it will help prevent water penetration due to driving rain. This is not a problem that every house faces, every time it rains, but let’s say it happens once or twice a year. Over a period of 20 years, that one or two times a year will cause a lot of damage over that period of time. Drip edge is cheap (aprx. $1.65 a foot) it is well worth the investment to protect your home.

5.  It is also perfect for sealing the start of the ice and water shield. Ice and water shield is a water proof membrane that roofing companies install before shingling and helps prevent water leakage in the event of an ice dam. Ice and water shield will adhere to the drip edge ten times better then the plywood roof deck. Making a impenetrable seal that cannot be penetrated by water.
